Understanding the Importance of Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a crucial program designed to educate individuals on how to identify, comprehend, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. In today’s society, where mental health issues are increasingly prevalent, having the skills to address these challenges is more important than ever.

What Does the MHFA Course Cover?

The MHFA course teaches participants how to apply the MHFA Action Plan, known as ALGEE, which includes:

– **Assessing** the risk of suicide or harm.
– **Listening** nonjudgmentally.
– **Giving** reassurance and information.
– **Encouraging** appropriate professional help.
– **Encouraging** self-help and other support strategies.

Upcoming Training Opportunity

For those interested in becoming certified in MHFA, Horizon Health is offering a free, certified training session. The course consists of two 4-hour sessions, which will be held on November 5 and November 12, 2024, from 9 AM to 1 PM. The in-person training will take place at the Amherst Chamber of Commerce in Williamsville, NY, and is open to both members and non-members. However, with only 30 seats available, spots are limited, so early registration is recommended.

MHFA training provides invaluable skills that can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges. By participating, you can be better prepared to offer support and potentially save lives.
