About

Amherst leads Western New York as its economic driver.  With a population of 129,300 which swells to 180,000+ during the day, Amherst is the most populous suburb of the City of Buffalo and the fourth largest municipality in Upstate New York.  Checking all the boxes for quality of life, Amherst offers families highly ranked school systems, safe affordable neighborhoods and an emphasis on diversity and cultural inclusion.

Amherst is home to nearly 42,000 college and university students. The State University of NY at Buffalo (UB), Erie Community College (ECC) and Daemen University are all located within the town’s 52 square mile boundaries. UB represents the largest population and is an important center for research, education, and innovation. It attracts a wide array of business to the area, and as a result many UB alumni have started their ventures or settled in Amherst to work for companies that value the town’s highly educated population.

Amherst’s Medical Spine Spine has become a hub for healthcare and biotech research in recent years. The town is home to many world-class medical facilities, research institutions, and a growing number of start-up companies in the healthcare and biotech sectors. Amherst\’s position in Western New York makes it an ideal place for businesses that rely on easy access to transportation. The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is located minutes away, and there are several major highways throughout the town, making Amherst an excellent choice for distribution and logistics companies.

In summary, ours is a well-established community with a robust economy that is growth oriented while balancing the desires of its residents and businesses. We offer our residents a high quality of life with safe neighborhoods, mixed income housing and highly rated schools. The low cost of living in the region is contrasted by Amherst’s high income. Our business-friendly environment gives companies a variety of advantages, like our highly educated population and excellent transportation access (including proximity to Canada and our adjacency to the Buffalo/Niagara International Airport.) The Town of Amherst Economic Development Department stands ready to help as you make your decision to grow your business with us.
